Summary Annual Report SUMMARY ANNUAL REPORT This is a summary of the Annual Report of the Western Pennsylvania Teamsters and Employers Welfare Fund ("Plan"), Employer Identification Number 25-1000614 - Plan Number 501, for the plan period January 1, 2003 through December 31, 2003. The Annual Report has been filed with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employee Benefits Security Administration, as required under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974 ("ERISA"). Insurance Information The Plan has contracts with Highmark Blue Shield, Vision Benefits of America, Highmark Life Insurance Company, Coventry Health Care, and UPMC Health Plan to pay Medical, Prescription Drug, Vision, Life Insurance, and Accidental Death and Dismemberment claims incurred under the terms of the Plan. The total premiums paid for the plan year ending December 31, 2003 were $27,179,411. Because they are so called "experience-rated" contracts, the premium costs are affected by, among other things, the number and size of claims. Of the total insurance premiums paid for the plan year ending December 31, 2003, the premiums paid under such "experience-rated" contracts were $26,788,010, and the total of all benefit claims paid under these "experience-rated" contracts during the plan year was $23,101,844. Basic Financial Statement The value of Plan assets, after subtracting liabilities of the Plan, was $38,119,365 as of December 31, 2003, compared to $33,875,268 as of January 1, 2003. During the plan year, the Plan experienced an increase in its net assets of $4,244,097. This increase includes unrealized appreciation and depreciation in the value of Plan assets; that is, the difference between the value of the Plan's assets at the end of the year and the value of the assets at the beginning of the year including the cost of assets acquired during the year. During the 2003 Plan Year, the Plan had total income of $35,653,467, including employer contributions of $30,609,995, employee contributions of $1,022,434, and earnings from investments of $4,021,038. Plan expenses were $31,409,370. These expenses included $1,599,615 in administrative expenses, and $29,809,755 in benefits paid to participants and beneficiaries.
